Darren Aronofsky is ready to set sail on Noah, the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. I’m hearing that the Black Swan director wants Russell Crowe to play the title role in the New Regency/Paramount film.

I have also heard Aronofsky wants The Grey star Liam Neeson for another role.

Crowe is rumored to be wanted for the RoboCop remake, as well. The Neeson role sounds like it could be the “villain”. Regardless, it appears a lot of details are in flux and none of this news should be taken as fact.

Noah Reportedly Has a Villain, Summer Shoot, Possible Fall 2013 Release

Noah Reportedly Has a Villain, Summer Shoot, Possible Fall 2013 Release:

They’re going to start shooting in July in New York and Iceland and he says it’s really a good script. They’re really doing the story of Noah, a very unlikely subject you might think for a cutting edge fellow like Darren Aronofsky, but that’s what they’re doing. It’s going to be more likely a Fall 2013 release.

That’s the hangup right now, they haven’t cast Noah yet. But it’s got a guy in his 40s so it’s not going to be young. It’s going to be 40s. And there’s a big villain part, gotta have a villain in the story of Noah…

Major studios don’t seem to have any issue with releasing two similar movies in close proximity, but hopefully it wouldn’t end up being a bane to Noah.

Clint Mansell Live at Largo, April 4-5

Clint Mansell Live at Largo, April 4-5:

Controversy aside, he addresses a passage in Genesis (6:1-4) in his novel. He references the Nephilim (giants) that are arguably the offspring of angels and humans. This is a much better explanation of the imagery in puzzling Noé page.

I think I’m just going to go with an open mind and see what these guys look like, their magic together, and then try and figure out where to put the camera. That’s what it is. There’s some incredible, beautiful imagery in the films in the Mead competition, and that was the joy of it. And those filmmakers were really present for their subject matter, and that’s the secret – be truthful to what’s happening in front of you.

It looks to be the proposed cover for the collection of volumes or at least an alternate cover. Brad Brevet said it best: ”what exactly Noah is facing off against in that image is a mystery.” Seems like it could be a David and Goliath reference, though. David is a descendent of Noah, but it’s a long lineage.

Of course, given the previous uncertainty of the Aronofsky’s Noah project, this novel was probably intended as a way to both ensure that Aronofsky’s version was released in a public medium and to help sell the project to studios. Given that this is being called a “Volume 1” release, I imagine the director has held back some of his vision for the now future film.

Henrichon’s post is written in French. I don’t speak French, so this text was run through Google Translate to get the gist (apologies on the rough translation):

Almost a year since the last update. I was a little busy with the new series that I started with Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel: Noah! Volume 1 which has just been published in Europe by Editions Le Lombard.

I’m working on it for over a year now and for many months, it was a little difficult to tell because of all the confidentiality surrounding the project directly or indirectly connected to Hollywood. In addition, we have just learned that Darren Aronofsky will also conduct a film about Noah in the coming years and will be produced at Paramount Pictures.

This Volume 1 of Noah, to say a few words, I would say the introduction of a story rather confusing. Those familiar with Aronofsky films are sure to notice its tendency to stage events and ambiguous inatendus who pushed to their extreme limits, changing forever the fate of the protagonists. It’s the same with our version of the myth of Noah. Those who believe that we are just going to recycle the myth of the Old Testament may be disappointed. I was told recently that the first volume was almost too normal for Aronofsky. Well done! To say more would spoil the surprise a little.

The novel is available for purchase through Le Lombard and Amazon France (but not in the US, as far as I can tell right now). You’ll also find some preview images and a longer trailer on their website.

Last, here is Le Lombard’s synopsis for Noé (Google Translate again):

It was a world without hope, a world with no rain and no crops, dominated by warlords and their barbarian hordes.

In this cruel world, Noah was a good man. Seasoned fighter, mage and healer but he only wanted peace for him and his family. Yet every night, Noah was beset by visions of an endless flood, symbolizing the destruction of all life.

Gradually, he began to understand the message sent him by the Creator. He had decided to punish the men and kill them until the last. But he gave Noah a last chance to preserve life on Earth…
